Artist Statement for New York Cares Design

My intention in this image is to portray New Yorkers of different ages lining up to get a health check by a doctor. An AIDS ribbon is highlighted in the border, representing the under-represented, who need all our prayers- all against a New York City night skyline, and a soothing blue pool of color. The slogan New York Cares is repeated in the border in four languages (Spanish, Arabic, Chinese & Russian) that represent a few of New York City's largest ethnic groups. I wanted to get away from the stereotype of doctors that I think most people have by portraying the doctor in this image as someone I know - a Pakistani woman from my neighborhood, who comes from a large family of doctors. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve my city in this way-namely that my art can be used to help. I am a native New Yorker, and I love my energetic city, with its special places- and the soulful human landscape. I've especially always loved to look at the urban city skyline at night, glittering like a beautiful diamond necklace.
