“I wanted the challenge. I wanted to train, spy, sniper, jump out of planes.”
-August, 2013 at the Bronx VA
“I enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1989. I was living in the Bronx and I had kids, but I was drawn to the Army because of the challenge of training. My family couldn’t believe that I actually entered the military.
“I did my training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. I was being trained as a Heavy-Wheel Vehicle Mechanic, fixing hummers. While in South Carolina I sustained a back injury and had an MST incident. After that, I was stationed in Fort Totten in Queens, New York, where I was a mechanic and then worked as a Food Service Specialist.
“After retiring from military service in 2004, I worked in sanitation for the Metropolitan Transit Authority of New York. Doing my art work in art therapy for female vets, many of whom were victims of MST, has helped me overcome my issues. ”
